Sinking driveways: wheel ruts, dipping entrances and settlement under cars

In shortA block paved driveway sinks where the sub-base cannot carry the weight of vehicles: along the wheel tracks, at the entrance where cars turn, in front of the garage door and over old trenches. The repair opens the affected strip, rebuilds the sub-base for vehicle loads in compacted layers, corrects the falls and any drainage at the entrance, then relays and compacts the original blocks.

Why is my block paved driveway sinking?

A driveway sinks because the layers under the blocks are compressing or moving under the weight of cars. Pavers spread load well, but only if the sub-base beneath them is deep enough, compacted in layers and kept dry. When one of those conditions fails, the surface deforms exactly where the load is concentrated.

  • Twin ruts along the line where tyres run, typical of a sub-base built for foot traffic only.
  • A dip just inside the gate or kerb, where cars brake, turn and climb onto the drive.
  • Sinking in front of the garage door, where vehicles stop and water from the door or roof collects.
  • A straight sunken line where a trench was dug for pipes or cables and backfilled loosely.
  • Early settlement on a new drive, months after laying, pointing to poor compaction.

The causes overlap, so an inspection with a few blocks lifted is often the quickest way to know. Our article why garage driveway pavers sink goes through the patterns and what each one usually means. Telling the patterns apart early avoids relaying blocks over a cause that is still active below them.

How do we repair a sunken driveway?

We repair a sunken driveway by lifting the blocks across the affected strip, excavating the weak material and rebuilding the sub-base to carry vehicles, before relaying the same blocks. The key difference from a patio repair is depth: a driveway needs a thicker, well-compacted granular layer to resist wheel loads.

  1. Lift the blocks along the ruts or dip, plus a margin of firm paving on each side.
  2. Dig out the bedding and the failed sub-base down to firm ground.
  3. Place granular sub-base in thin layers, compacting each one before adding the next.
  4. Correct the falls so water leaves the drive, not the garage or the house.
  5. Screed a fresh grit bed, relay the blocks in their original bond and compact.
  6. Top up the jointing sand and check the level with a straight edge across the wheel paths.

Where ruts run along the whole length of the drive, it is often more practical to relay the full width in one go. The general method is the same as our lift and relay service, and the stages are photographed for owners who follow the work from abroad.

Driveways shared by several houses or by a community of owners follow the same method, but the work is usually phased so that residents keep access to their garages. We agree the phasing with the administrator or with each owner beforehand, and the photos taken during the work are shared with everyone who needs to approve it.

What can be done about water at the garage door or driveway entrance?

Water collecting at the garage door or at the bottom of a sloping drive is a drainage problem as much as a levels problem. If the fall runs towards the building, or the entrance is the lowest point, rainwater pools there, soaks into the bed and accelerates sinking.

Installing a channel drain between kerbs
Installing a channel drain between kerbs

The usual answer is a channel drain across the width of the drive, just in front of the garage door or at the entrance, connected to a suitable outlet. The paving either side is relaid to fall into it. Whether that outlet can be an existing drain, a gully or a soakaway depends on the property and should be checked on site. Details are on our drainage and standing water page, and our sister site has a guide on falls and drains on driveways.

Does a steep or sloping driveway need extra edge restraint?

On a sloping drive, gravity and braking push the blocks downhill. Without good edge restraint and an intermediate restraint across the slope, the pavers gradually creep, joints open at the top and blocks bunch up at the bottom. The effect is gradual, so it is often noticed only when the joints at the top of the slope have clearly widened and edging blocks have shifted.

A course of blocks laid on end or a kerb set in concrete across the drive, often called a soldier course, helps hold the paving on steep sections. When we relay a sloping driveway we check the side edgings and, where the slope warrants it, discuss adding a restraint line across it. New sloping drives are a construction job rather than a repair, and they are covered by our sister site under sloping driveways.

Should the whole driveway be relaid or only the sunken parts?

Only the sunken parts, if the rest of the drive is firm, level and drains properly. A full relay is justified when ruts and dips appear across most of the surface, which suggests the sub-base was under-built everywhere, or when many blocks are cracked by the load.

We look at the drive as a whole before recommending either. The guide repair or replace explains the decision criteria, and the article repairing sunken paving or relaying everything compares the two from an owner's point of view. If the drive needs completely new paving rather than a repair, our sister site's page on driveway block paving describes that work.

What drives the cost of a driveway repair?

The main cost drivers are the length and width of the strip to be lifted, how deep the sub-base must be rebuilt, whether a channel drain is added, and how easily materials and a compactor can reach the drive. Removal of excavated material is another line that should be stated in the quote.

We do not quote figures on this site. Indicative rates for repair work are published on the paving repair cost page, and the cost calculator gives a rough band. Frequently asked questions

Why are there ruts where my car wheels go?

Ruts along the tyre tracks show that the sub-base cannot carry vehicle loads. It may be too thin, laid without layered compaction or softened by water. The repair rebuilds the sub-base in compacted layers before the blocks are relaid.

Why has my new driveway started sinking after a few months?

Early settlement on a new drive usually means the sub-base was under-compacted or laid on soft ground, or a trench below was backfilled loosely. It is a base fault, not a block fault, and is fixed by opening the area and rebuilding it.

Can a sunken driveway be repaired without new blocks?

Usually yes. Concrete blocks survive sinking well, so they can be lifted, cleaned and relaid in the same bond once the base is rebuilt. Only cracked or broken units need replacing with the closest matching block.

What is a channel drain across the driveway for?

A channel drain collects surface water across the full width of the drive and carries it to an outlet, so it does not run into the garage or pool at the entrance. The paving either side is laid to fall towards it.

My driveway slopes towards the house. What can be done?

If levels allow, the drive can be relaid with the fall reversed. Where the house is at the low point, a channel drain in front of the door or wall intercepts the water. The right option depends on the levels and available outlets.

Is a soldier course needed on a steep drive?

On steep sections a restraint across the slope, such as blocks on end or a kerb in concrete, helps stop the paving creeping downhill. Whether it is needed depends on the gradient, the edgings and how the drive is used.

Will relaying fix the dip at the driveway entrance?

Yes, if the base under the entrance is rebuilt to carry turning and braking loads. Entrances take more stress than the rest of the drive, so the sub-base there is excavated and compacted with particular care.

Does a sunken drive over a trench need special treatment?

Yes. The trench backfill must be dug out and replaced with granular material compacted in thin layers, so it matches the surrounding ground. Simply adding bedding on top leaves the soft backfill in place to settle again.

Do I need permission to repair my driveway?

Repairs on private land are usually minor works, but the procedure is set by each town hall. If the job affects the public pavement or the kerb drop for a vehicle crossing, a separate municipal authorisation is normally needed, and the local ordinance explains how to request it.

Can I use the drive while the repair is in progress?

Not the section being repaired. Once the blocks are relaid and compacted, the drive can be used again. If the whole width is being worked on, we plan with you how vehicles will be parked elsewhere during the work.
